Needle up/Needle down makes a different, labored noise when moving up and down.

Baste Mode uses a faster speed

To prevent the needle catching in the fabric, Baste Mode operates at a faster speed than any other mode. Because of this, it sounds different when it performs a needle up/needle down in baste mode, because perfect stitch is using the same speed settings as Baste Mode.
